About us

A smiling couple poses at a mountain trail sign under a blue sky.

We're Ben and Laura, and the Lake District has been part of our lives for many years — hiking the fells, working through the Wainwrights and exploring the valleys in every season. We got married in Troutbeck Bridge, just south of Ambleside, in 2018, and it had long been a dream of ours to have a permanent base here.

A charming stone cottage with green trim surrounded by greenery under a partly cloudy sky.

When we found Bracken Howe, we knew it was special. Built in 1880, it has all the character

you'd hope for in a Victorian Lakeland home — original tiled floors, a carved staircase,

generous room proportions — alongside the modern comforts that make a family holiday genuinely relaxing. It sits in a quiet street just minutes from the centre of Ambleside, yet the fell views feel miles from anywhere.

Sunny backyard with a stone house and lush garden.

We want Bracken Howe to feel like a home rather than just a rental property.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

“This was another great family week at Bracken Howe in glorious Ambleside and we feel it is now our second home.”
